Common questions about sole trader tax returns
How much does a sole trader tax return cost?
$330 inc GST, with your personal return included. Registered for GST, $440, which covers reconciling the BAS you lodged to your books. One or two employees, another $110. Rental properties, capital gains, crypto and foreign income are priced per item on this page, and each overdue year is the standard price less 10%. For market-wide price ranges, see our guide to what business tax returns cost in Australia.
What does the return include?
Your personal tax return with the business schedule, a review of your income and expenses, deductions like home office, tools and one vehicle logbook, and lodgement with the ATO. Salary and wages, interest, dividends, Medicare and HELP details are in the same price. A rental property, capital gains, crypto or foreign income are the add-ons listed above.
I am registered for GST. What changes?
During the year you report GST to the ATO on your BAS, and your return has to agree with what you reported. So before we prepare it we reconcile every BAS you lodged to your books, and your reported sales to your business income. That is the $110. Lodging the BAS themselves is separate: $150 each, or $250 with payroll, whoever lodges them. If the BAS you lodged do not reconcile, fixing them is $80 an hour with the hours agreed before we start.
How long does it take?
We aim to prepare most returns within five business days of onboarding, provided your records are in order and we have what we need. Turnaround varies with complexity.
Do I need accounting software?
It helps, but no. We work with all major accounting software (Xero, MYOB, QuickBooks, Wave, Reckon, Sage, Zoho Books and others), and we can also work from a clean spreadsheet, or your bank transactions and a list of expenses, if your affairs are simple.
What can I claim as a sole trader?
Business expenses like home office costs, vehicle use, tools, equipment, insurance and professional fees, depending on your situation. Your accountant reviews what applies to you rather than running a generic checklist.
What's the difference between a sole trader and a company?
Sole traders report business income on their personal return. A company (Pty Ltd) is a separate legal entity that lodges its own return. Registered with ASIC and have an ACN? See our company tax return service, or check your structure here.
Can you help if I am behind on my returns?
Yes. We regularly bring sole traders up to date across multiple overdue years, and each overdue year is the standard price less 10%, with add-ons and any outstanding BAS at the standard price. See our overdue tax returns service.
