Common questions about BAS
How much does BAS lodgement cost?
$150 inc GST per statement, or $250 when the statement carries payroll (PAYG withholding), fuel tax credits or instalment variations. The same $150 covers an annual GST return, an outstanding statement brought up to date, and the final nil statement when we cancel a registration. A BAS is always on top of the return, whichever structure you are. Prices assume reconciled books; if yours are not, bookkeeping is $80 an hour with the hours agreed first.
What is a BAS?
A Business Activity Statement reports your GST, PAYG withholding and PAYG instalments to the ATO. Most GST-registered businesses lodge quarterly.
Do I need to lodge a BAS?
If you are registered for GST, yes. Registration is required once your turnover reaches $75,000, and ride-share drivers must register from the first fare. Not sure whether you are registered? We can check for you.
Can I report GST annually instead of quarterly?
Some businesses can. If you registered for GST voluntarily and your turnover is under $75,000, you can elect to report GST annually with a single annual GST return, which we prepare and lodge for $150 alongside your tax return. It often suits low-activity companies claiming GST credits on their expenses. We can check your eligibility and set it up with the ATO.
When is my BAS due?
Quarterly BAS is generally due about four weeks after quarter end, and lodging through a registered agent usually gives you extra time. We track your due dates so you never have to.
I lodge my own BAS. What happens at tax time?
Your return has to agree with what you reported, so we pull the statements you lodged from the ATO and reconcile them to your books before we prepare it. That reconciliation is why a sole trader return is $440 registered for GST rather than $330, and a company return $660. If the statements do not reconcile, we tell you the hours to fix them, at $80 an hour, before we start.
I am behind on my BAS. Can you help?
Yes. Each outstanding statement is the standard $150, or $250 with payroll, plus bookkeeping hours only for quarters whose records need work. Lodged none this year? Books first if they need it, then the four statements, then the return. You get one written quote for the lot before anything starts, and late lodgement penalties can often be remitted, so we ask. See our overdue tax returns service if returns are outstanding too.
Is the BAS included in my tax return price?
No. BAS lodgements are always priced per statement on top of the return, whichever structure you are. What the return price does include is reconciling the BAS you lodged to your books before the return is prepared: for a sole trader that is the difference between $330 and $440, and for a company, trust or partnership it sits inside the $660 return.
I am registered for GST but not trading any more. Do I keep lodging?
Until the registration is cancelled, yes, even if every statement is nil. If you no longer need to be registered we cancel it with the ATO and lodge the final nil BAS for $150. A final BAS with activity is priced as a normal BAS.
Can you do my tax return as well?
Yes, and it usually works out simpler having both in one place. BAS clients get the same fixed-fee tax return pricing on the pricing page.
Ready to take BAS off your plate?
