Privacy Policy

Who we are

ReturnTax ("we", "us") is an Australian online tax and accounting service. Tax agent services are provided by Shane Burns, a registered tax agent. ReturnTax is a trading name of The Burns Family Investment Trust, ABN 13 917 451 514. We handle your personal information in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth), the Australian Privacy Principles and, for tax file numbers, the Privacy (Tax File Number) Rule 2015.

What we collect

To prepare and lodge tax returns we collect information including:

  • Identity and contact details (name, email, phone, address, date of birth)
  • Tax identifiers (TFN, ABN, ACN) as permitted under the TFN Rule
  • Financial records, including accounting software data you grant us access to
  • Information from the ATO relating to your lodgement history and obligations

How we use it

We use your information solely to provide tax agent and related accounting services: preparing and lodging returns and statements, communicating with the ATO on your behalf, and communicating with you about your engagement, including deadline reminders and occasional emails about our services, which you can unsubscribe from at any time. We do not sell your information or use it for third-party marketing.

Storage and security

Your information is held in access-controlled cloud systems: Google Workspace for email, the documents you send us and our enquiry records, the ATO's online services, and the accounting software you grant us access to. Form submissions from this website are delivered through Web3Forms, and the site is hosted by Cloudflare. Some of these providers store data outside Australia. Access to your accounting software is view-level where possible and can be revoked by you at any time. Tax records and working papers are kept for at least five years after lodgement, as the law requires, and destroyed or de-identified when no longer needed.

Disclosure

We disclose information to the ATO as required to deliver our services, to the service providers named above so they can provide their service to us, and otherwise only where you authorise it or the law requires it.

This website

We use Google Analytics to see how the site is used and Microsoft Clarity for anonymised session recordings on the contact and Get Started pages, with typed form text masked. Both set cookies. Google Signals and ads personalisation are off, so none of it builds advertising profiles, and none of it is sold. The site works normally with analytics blocked.

You can request access to, or correction of, the personal information we hold about you by emailing hello@returntax.com.au.

Complaints

If you have a privacy concern, contact us first and we will respond within five business days. You can also contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au.
